GoChords is an easy way to create chordsheets for songs. But first you have to register. It's free, so don't mind. After that you can start with a new song. Just copy the lyrics from wherever you want and paste it into the screen. After that you can select the chords and put them into the correct place. Select font and size, and size of chord boxes and there you go. It's as easy as that.

Supported instruments are so far: guitar, different Ukuleles and Mandolin. No bouzouki so far. But don't mind. You can create your own chords. What I did is, I selected mandolin and defined my own chords for this instrument. So I select mandolin and custom chords and I can use my own chords. That's ok for me. I hope they will support bouzouki in the future as well.

pdebee posted another one of his gems. He had the chance to make a video of Andy explaining how to play Reynardine. Patrick writes:

"On Wednesday 15 September 2004, Andy was scheduled to perform at the Tower Arts Centre in Winchester, UK.

The week before, on Wednesday 8 September, I had seen him perform at the West End Centre in Aldershot and, at the end of that gig, I had asked him if he would allow me to film him playing 'Reynardine/Johnny Cúig' in Winchester a week later, so that I could learn it from the resulting video.

To my amazement, he kindly suggested that we meet up at the Winchester venue a few hours before he was due on stage, so that I could film him close-up and unencumbered by obstacles like microphone stands etc..

So, a week later, I turned up at the Winchester Tower Arts Centre as agreed and, sure enough, after his sound check we went backstage and this video clip is the end-result: a one-to-one, close-up demonstration on how to play 'Reynardine/Johnny Cúig'.

By the way, Andy tells us that the 'Johnny Cúig' tune was inspired by the song and 6-part hornpipe called Johnny Cope he used to sing and play in Planxty days (see 'Cold Blow and the Rainy Night'). After adapting parts of the hornpipe to the Bulgarian paidushko rhythm of 5/8, he decided to call the resulting tune 'Johnny Cúig', since 'cúig' means '5' in Irish.

A regular at the Brogan's sessions she has built up a nice repertoire of Irish tunes. Here she plays a spankin' rendition of the Fermoy Lasses and the dark classic 'Gooseberry Bush', with Quentin Cooper also on fiddle, and Eoin O'Neill on Bouzouki. Willy Daly and Suzanne Leahy get up and stamp out a few steps for the craic, this was a lovely night in Kenny's, Lahinch (Dec 2010)."

Eoin O'Neill is from Clare (Originally from Dublin) and plays in ADAD-tuning. This is what Han Speek writes:

"Basically, simplicity rules. Since you already have a D chord without fretting any string, you could strum and drone behind any tune in D, and not sound out of place. Then, by simply adding any note in the D scale, you could colour this D chord to sound like something that will effectively do the job of any chord you'd want for the scale of D. This is what Eoin does most of the time: he knows his D scale in and out, up and down, and he just colours his droning D chord. He occasionally throws in a single note run, either following or countering the melody, but if you know your scales, that's a piece of cake, of course.

Andy Irvine - New Album out

Andy's new album called Abocurragh is out now.

Some of the tracks on the album were long awaited to be released as they are part of his live repertiore for many years now, like "The close shave" or "The spirit of Mother Jones". But there are also lots of new songs and a newly recorded "Willy of Winsbury" (Remember Sweeney's Men?).

You can listen to 30 sec samples on his website. I tried to order it for two weeks or so but didn't get an answer from Andy (He was on tour, as nearly always, wasn't he?). But today I got a mail from him. He now has changed his website, so it is possible to order the new album directly from him. I think it would be a nice gesture, to order directly from him so he gets all the benefits for his work.

My friend Peter from Frankfurt/Germany posted this video in which he is playing a song by Peter Hoben from Castlebar Co. Mayo. His bouzouki is made in Serbia, it's the first of its kind built there. The sound is superb, as far as I can hear from the video.

Robert Tincher has been singing the ballads of Scotland and Northern Ireland since 1973 and has played with several well-known Celtic music groups in Kentucky and southern Ohio. The first, Mad Catherine and the Moondog Pirates, gave many fans their first taste of the music back in the early 1980's.
More recently, Robert was part of Pale, Stout and Amber, who Lexington Herald-Leader music writer Walter Tunis once called "the top local pick for Irish and Celtic music." Although they never widely toured, their 2004 Pale, Stout & Amber CD received international radio airplay and favorable reviews in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
In June, 2007, Atlanta's Southern Arts Federation selected Pale, Stout and Amber as one of two Spotlight Artists of the Month from a registry of 752 performers, writers, and visual and media artists from the southeastern United States who have been recognized for the outstanding quality of their work.

Ralf, the writer of the German book for the Irish Bouzouki just informed me, that his book is currently translated into English.

The Uilleann piper of his band is studying in Limerick, where she is working on a translation. Let's hope it will not take too long before we can announce a new book for the world market. And I can promise you it will be of great interest for all players of the Irish Bouzouki.

Pennknivsmördaren (Penknife Killer" is a traditional Swedish tune. Kruzifinger learded it from Ken P, a member of "Mandolin Cafe", who learned it from Swedish group Vasen. Kruzifinger plays it on his Zouk tuned GDAD, Capo 2.

First there's a video from January 24, 1999 in New Zealand, Christchurch. Live at Maddison's . Andy plays his solo version of the classic "The Blacksmith". Not the best quality but really worth watching.

Tim Browne - The Bold Thady Quill (The Bould Thady Quill)

Another fine song by Tim Browne, one of my favourite Bouzouki players. This is what he writes about the song:

This is a version of the great Cork song written over 100 years ago by Johnny Tom Gleeson. I recorded this version on Mutiny in the County a solo album I made in 2003. The lyrics were published in the 1993 edition of the wonderful Seanchas Duthalla Magazine in an article written by one James Chisman.

It is a mighty song and many versions of it, even one in the Irish language, are known. I particularily like this version because of its Land League component and Chisman mentioned in his article that this version is thought to be the nearest lyrically to the original version. The song has undergone many changes and additions since the original believed to have been written in the 1880's and first published around the early 1920's.

It is a much favoured drinking song possibly due to the references to drinking black porter as fast as you'll fill etc., Some extra lines have been added to this version so perhaps in one hundred years time or so Thade Quill will have become an internationally recognised academic, and maybe even an assissinated President of America................!!!
